Coastal Tour:
This wonderful trip will start from your hotel in Athens or Piraeus. It includes a one day tour to Marathon, Laurio and Sounio.
Marathon is a historical area, where in 490BC the Battle of Marathon took place, between the heavily outnumbered Athenian army and the Persians. Greeks won and Pheidippides, a herald at the battle, was sent running back to Athens (42.195meters) to announce the victory. That's how the Marathon race was conceived in modern times.
Lavrio is a town in southeastern part of Attica, Greece. Laurium was famous in Classical antiquity for its silver mines, which was one of the chief sources of revenue of the Athenian state. The metallic silver was mainly used for coinage. The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion shows much of the story of these mines.
Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea.
Two ancient temples were built on the Cape; the famous temple of Poseidon and a smaller temple of Athena. At its highest point, the surviving temple of Poseidon is Doric, and was built in the Pericles era, from 444 to 440 B.C. For its construction was used white marble of Agrileza area. It was built in the position of an earlier temple made of limestone. The previous temple, dating from the early 5th century, was destroyed in 480 B.C. by the Persians, before its completion. Architectural parts of the Temple of Poseidon can be seen in the Lavrio.
